Climate change – whose responsibility?

Climate change is much debated issues in the world and in our country too. The temperature of the globe is increasing day by day, which led the countries all over the world worry. To combat climate change, the government of various countries and international organizations are advocating the public through various means of information and communications and all. But is it responsibility of international organizations?

To combat climate change, all the citizens of the world should work together. In our country, the government and organizations are working together to battle the climate change, which is in the verge of changing now and then. Does it lie all in the hands of government and other organizations to battle the climate change? Do we need to join our hands with the government and organizations?

Our country is rich in environment, from which we get fresh and clean air. Now it’s changing day after day because of increase in industrial estates, more developmental activities, use of greenhouse and many more, in the country. Our pristine environment will one day, see nowhere. The fresh and clean air will be minimal. Therefore, we should always join our hands with concerned agencies for combating climate change immediately.

The climate change will increase temperature of the world, which leads to melt the glaciers and snow on the high altitudes. This will increase the volume of the rivers which will directly go to oceans and increase the level of water in ocean. When water level of the ocean is increased drastically, island countries will submerge in the water. This lead to more water covered earth.

When such problems are arising due to climate change, the island countries are worried and sharing their concerns to combat climate change. There are numerous organizations such as United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). UNFCCC’s Executive Secretary also visited the country to talk on climate change. She has proclaimed that our country should have to play greater role in battling the climate change. What measures our country should take forward now?

We are left with great responsibility to shoulder in the world. Our country being more than 72 percent forested areas; we should feel proud to play our role to combat climate change in greater ways. Advocacy programs, conventions and seminars at national level should be carried out sooner than later. Use of greenhouse, automobiles and many more should be minimized. But will it help combat climate change?

Given the chance to advocate people in every nook and corner of the country, we are ever ready to volunteer for few months to years, if concerned authorities provided with necessary things. This is my true concern over climate change affecting our country.

For instance, before decades, during summer, Thimphu was cold place, where people have to wear thick clothes. See now, people walking in streets are wearing very thin clothes to avoid them from hot temperature. This is all due to climate change where we Bhutanese should join our hands in hands to fight it.

In the schools, the school administration should conduct drawing and essay writing competitions within students. Few drawing and essay writing competitions are conducting at national level these days. These would help students in far flung areas know about climate change and ultimately, directly or indirectly they get advocated. Will it help up to certain level?

If the measures are not taken from now, the outcome of climate change will soon going to exist in our country very badly. That time, we cannot rewind to what we are today, but rather we should take active parts in battling the climate change and live peacefully and happily, in near future. Let’s play our role as citizen of the world and Bhutan as well.
